Yes — but only on a line engineered for it from the frame up, and 25mm is also the practical ceiling of hot-rolled coil itself. A machine rated 0.3–3mm cannot be up-rated to 25mm by fitting a bigger motor; the leveler frame, the shear, the uncoiler and the stacker are sized by different physics entirely. This is the straight answer to can a Cut To Length Line handle 25mm thick plate, with the force and coil-geometry numbers that separate a real 8–25mm machine from a relabelled 6mm one.

The shear and the leveler must be re-rated together — and the shear is what exposes most "up-rated" lines. Cutting force on a raked blade follows F = t² × τ / (2·tanφ), where τ is shear strength (≈0.7 × tensile) and φ the blade rake angle. Note what is missing from that formula: width. A raked blade shears progressively across the strip, so force scales with the square of thickness, not with the length of cut.
| Material | Tensile | Shear strength τ | Raked blade force at 25mm, 2° rake | First-roll separating force, 2m wide |
| Q235 / A36 | 400 MPa | 280 MPa | ≈ 256 t | ≈ 53 t |
| Q355 / S355 | 470 MPa | 330 MPa | ≈ 301 t | ≈ 81 t |
| Q690 / S690 | 790 MPa | 550 MPa | ≈ 502 t | ≈ 157 t |
A parallel, zero-rake blade on the same 2m-wide plate would need over 700t instead, which is why no serious heavy gauge cut to length line for 20mm hot rolled plate uses one. Those three figures are what actually decide can a cut to length line handle 25mm thick plate on a given shop floor; everything else in the brochure is secondary.
The leveler is the second re-rate. Driving a section into full plastic penetration requires bending moment Mp = σy × t²/4 per mm of width. At 25mm Q355 that is 55.5 kN·mm/mm — about 25× the moment of a 5mm sheet of the same grade — and the resulting separating force, ≈2·Mp/pitch, lands near 80t on the first work roll of a 2m-wide plate. What that forces in practice:
✅ Bottom line: A genuine 25mm line needs a 6-Hi leveler with Ø260mm-plus rolls and a raked shear rated 300t; the shear is the component that fails first when a 6mm machine is sold as a 25mm one.
A 30–40t uncoiler is the standard answer, but width — not weight — is the real constraint. Hot-rolled plate at 25mm × 2000mm weighs 392kg per metre, so coil geometry, not motor power, sets the maximum coil weight for heavy plate cut to length line.
| Coil weight | Strip length at 25 × 2000mm | Coil OD (610mm ID) | Run time at 12 m/min |
| 20 t | 51 m | ≈ 1.41 m | 4.2 min |
| 30 t | 76 m | ≈ 1.68 m | 6.4 min |
| 40 t | 102 m | ≈ 1.90 m | 8.5 min |
Three consequences follow from that table:
Tolerances also reset: ±1.0mm on length and 1–2mm/m on flatness are realistic at 25mm. Anyone quoting ±0.3mm and 0.5mm/m is quoting the 3mm world. In terms of footprint, plan 45–60m of line on a continuous reinforced foundation, against 20–25m for a 3mm line.
Ruilong builds its 8–25 × 2000mm configuration with a rough leveler, a separate fine leveler and a moving tracking shear, because no single-pass leveler can deliver both the penetration and the flatness. Every machine is custom-engineered to the coil grade and width range at our China plant, and Tai'an Ruilong Machinery Co., Ltd. validates penetration settings on the buyer's own material before shipment — a habit that matters when the difference between 1.5% and 3% penetration is 300t of frame load.
✅ Bottom line: Specify 30–40t at 1500–2000mm width, then size the stacker for 25t packs; throughput is limited by coil changes, not by line speed.
Q: Can a cut to length line handle 25mm thick plate with a flying shear? A: No. Rotary flying shears are practical to about 6–8mm. At 20mm and above you need a start-stop raked hydraulic shear, or a moving tracking shear that clamps the strip and travels with it through the cut.
Q: What is the maximum coil weight for heavy plate cut to length line? A: 30–40t covers nearly every 8–25mm application. Ruilong fits 30t as standard and offers 40t on request; heavier 45t+ uncoilers exist but rarely pay back, since a 25mm × 2000mm coil runs out in minutes whatever its weight.
Q: Do you build custom heavy-gauge lines, or only standard models? A: Both. Ruilong supplies standard 1–6mm and 6–16mm lines and engineers 8–25mm configurations to order as an OEM/ODM coil-processing supplier, including high-strength builds running to POSCO acceptance criteria.
Send Ruilong your steel grade, thickness range, width and target coil weight. The engineering team at Tai'an Ruilong Machinery Co., Ltd. returns a shear-force and leveler-load calculation, a custom line layout and a factory-direct quote — for any heavy gauge cut to length line for 20mm hot rolled plate project, free of charge and without obligation.
